ABOUT
Xenia Zorpidou was born in 1996 in Limassol, Cyprus. She graduated from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Faculty of Visual and Applied Arts in 2019 with an Integrated Master’s degree. She specializes in oil painting while alongside experimenting with photography, performance and installations.
Her work is based on social matters and modern society’s obsession with owning material objects, with exposure and social appearance. Humans have a tendency towards material possessions and less towards the spiritual world, they are content with owning things and cannot master their consuming impulses. Fashion, mass media and advertisement occupy people’s vital space by promising prosperity and heaven on earth. Fashion and clothing have been a factor of social delimitation since older times.
The artist wants to create a dialogue between clothes and man, between material and spirit. The seemingly anonymous person coexists pathetically with the clothes, he is depicted in an awkward position and he is hidden behind them. White is the colour of austerity, clarity and truth, it symbolizes the deeper value of people, the clear spirit that contrasts exaggeration. The artist wishes to project an inner conflict regarding the acceptance and rejection of mass culture, the intensive need one has in owning physical objects and at the same time the passive adaptation to that need.
